DeWitt, Liesch at it again in NWC's 70-51 win over Bethany Lutheran

MANKATO, Minn. -- Northwestern College used a 14-point first half advantage to coast to a 70-51 win over Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday afternoon to hang on to a two-way tie for second place in the UMAC standings. The win gives the Eagles a 2-0 record in 2010 and a 3-1 mark in conference play.

Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) each scored 17 points, while Kelsey Kosman (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) contributed 14 points, as Northwestern outscored Bethany 14-5 in second chance points while trouncing the Vikings with a 52-36 edge in rebounding.  Allison Johnson (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian) (Greenfield, Minn./Heritage Christian) and DeWitt had a lot to do with the Eagles' success on the glass. Johnson grabbed 11 boards in 19 minutes of play, while DeWitt tallied nine rebounds. At 5'5”, Liesch chipped in nicely with seven rebounds of her own.

As a team, the Eagles barely missed the 40-percent mark for shooting, but for the second straight night, held their opponents to a considerably less performance. Bethany Lutheran countered NWC's performance with a 19-62 (30.6 percent) night.

Northwestern improves its season record to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Eagles will take a week off before making the rather short drive to St. Bonifacius, Minn. next Saturday for a 3 p.m. bout with Crown College.
