Men's Soccer scores, but falls to UW-Superior 3-1

Box Score

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Although the Northwestern College men's soccer team scored its first goal of the 2009 season, the Eagles were unable to keep pace with the University of Wisconsin-Superior, losing to the Yellow Jackets in 3-1 fashion. NWC, which was playing its second game in as many days, struggled to convert on opportunities which eventually led to the loss.

Ryan Scharnott scored the game's first goal for UW-Superior, taking an assist from Aaron Bresser in the 9th minute of play. After going into halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Yellow Jackets' Bresser scored a pair of back-to-back goals himself in the 51st and 55th minutes, giving Superior a 3-0 advantage.

Freshman Jeremy Stiner (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) put a goal through for Northwetern in the game's 85th minute, taking a pass from Lucas Asmus (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) before scoring in the box to account for the final 3-1 score.

Northwestern got 13 shots off, besting Superior's nine. Eagles' goalkeeper Danny King (Willmar, MN/Willmar High School) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) had one save on the day, while the Jackets' Tom Fitzer tallied seven saves.

NWC will be back on the same game field on Monday for its third game in four days, taking on Bethel University in Arden Hills. That game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
