Men's Soccer loses to St. Scholastica in UMAC opener

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College men's soccer team lost its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opening game to the College of St. Scholastica on Friday in a 5-1 final.  At 0-6 (0-1 UMAC), the Eagles still seek their first win of the 2009 season.

St. Scholastica's Joey Maida opened up the game's scoring with a goal assisted by Brandon Stemwedel and Toby Peter in the 18th minute.  Courtney Bonnick followed with a Saints goal at 29:53, sending the game into halftime with a 2-0 St. Scholastica lead.

Northwestern got on the board as St. Scholastica scored an own goal early in the second half, keeping the Eagles in the game at 2-1.  The Saints followed with three unanswered goals by Rob Miller, Erik Trochimchuck and Ian Krafnick to win 5-1.

St. Scholastica (4-0 overall, 2-0 UMAC) had 12 shots in the game, compared to Northwestern's five.  The Eagles tallied more corner kicks 5-4.

Northwestern will have an opportunity to earn Win No. 1 on the season on Saturday, as the team hosts Northland College at Mounds View High School in Mounds View, Minn.  Both teams will be playing their second game in as many days.  Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
