Win over Martin Luther gives Eagles clean sweep of weekend

NEW ULM, Minn. (Feb. 7, 2009) –
Less than 24 hours after beating Bethany Lutheran College, Northwestern College made it a perfect 2-0 weekend, defeating Martin Luther College 70-62 on Saturday afternoon. Three players scored in double figures for the Eagles, who have won eight of their last nine games.

Down 28-27 at halftime, NWC scored 43 second-half points, courtesy of a 9-0 run in the final eight minutes, to post an eight-point victory. Much like the night before, Northwestern held a strong edge in rebounding (42-32) while tallying six blocks on the night.

Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) led NWC with 17 points, while Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points to go with 10 rebounds in 29 minutes. Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) also chipped in 15 points, going a perfect 13 of 13 from the free throw line. As a team, the Eagles made 35 of their 45 free throw attempts.

Lissa Babinec scored a team-high 15 points for Martin Luther (9-11, 6-4 UMAC).
 
At 10-11 overall and 8-2 in UMAC play, Northwestern remains tied for second in the conference, trailing the University of Minnesota, Morris by just a game. The Eagles will have the opportunity to continue their push for the league's top spot on Friday, Feb. 13, when they host Northland College, the team who shares second place with NWC. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Ericksen Center.
