ST. PAUL (Feb. 20, 2009) – The Northwestern College women's basketball team never let up on Friday night, taking the lead for good midway through the first half and not looking back in a 63-57 victory over the University of Minnesota, Morris. Taking advantage of every opportunity, the Eagles scored 21 points off of Morris' 19 turnovers in the game while only committing 11 mistakes of their own.  Northwestern drained five three-pointers in the first half, courtesy of Marcy Nelson (Sandstone, Minn./East Central)'s (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) hot hand. The senior made 4 of her 6 attempts from the floor in the initial 20 minutes, going 3-for-5 from behind the three-point line, propelling NWC to a 34-21 halftime lead.

Northwestern started off strong in the second half before allowing the Cougars from Morris to go on a 10-0 run, resulting in a 41-37 Eagles' lead with 10 minutes left to play. Aided by the support of the mostly black-outfitted crowd, Northwestern pushed to keep its lead. Minnesota, Morris didn't go away easily, as Jenni Noordman's three-pointer with 34 seconds remaining cut the Eagles' lead to three. A timeout by NWC head coach Linda Schuck proved worthy, as her team scored four straight points to close out the game with a 64-57 win.

Although Northwestern only made 35 percent of its attempts, the Eagles grabbed 32 rebounds in the game while dishing out 14 assists. Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) scored 12 points and tallied eight rebounds, while three of Kendrick's teammates each added six boards apiece. Katie Dewitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) was Northwestern's leader, scoring 16 points in the game. Nelson finished the game with 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting.

Morris' Steph Roggenbuck led all players with 18 points, adding eight rebounds in the Cougars' loss. Coresa Leighty posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the visitors, who fall to 13-11 overall (10-3 UMAC).

Tonight's win puts the Eagles in a tie for second in the conference standings with Morris at 10-3. Northwestern also reached the .500 plateau for the season at 12-12. NWC isn't out of the conference championship race yet, as an Eagles' win and a Northland loss tomorrow would produce a tie for first place in the UMAC.  Northland won at least a share of the conference title tonight after defeating Martin Luther. Northwestern will host Presentation College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., wrapping up both teams' regular seasons.
