Defense proves worthy in Eagles’ win over St. Scholastica

Box Score

ST. PAUL (Feb. 14, 2009) –
Playing good defense proved its worth for the Northwestern College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles held the College of St. Scholastica scoreless for almost 14 minutes in the first half en route to a 50-43 win. After the Saints' Laura Amys made scored the first points of the game for either team, St. Scholastica wasn't able to make its next basket until the clock read 5:22, when Northwestern had scored 19 points. Five minutes later, the Eagles went into the locker room with a 22-12 halftime lead.

The Saints went on a 13-3 run to start the second half, cutting Northwestern's lead to three points, but the Eagles were able to push their lead back to double digits again by the eight-minute mark. Leading by five with 1:15 to play, Northwestern's Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) scored five straight points for her team to preserve the 50-43 win.

Neither team had a great shooting performance throughout the game, as Northwestern made 33 percent of its attempts, while St. Scholastica countered with 29 percent. The Eagles held advantages in points in the paint, points off of turnovers, second chance points and bench points.

NWC's Liesch scored 12 points in the win, while Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Liesch, who was one of four Eagles to grab eight or more rebounds in the game, came one board shy of her own double-double. As a team, Northwestern out-rebounded St. Scholastica 50-33.

Kirsten Haukom and Amys each scored 11 points to lead St. Scholastica, who falls to 8-15 overall (5-7 UMAC).

Northwestern, who improves to 11-12 overall and 9-3 in UMAC play with the win, will finish off its conference regular season next weekend when it hosts Minnesota-Morris and Presentation. Current UMAC-leader Minnesota-Morris will come to town first for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off on Friday, Feb. 20.
