Northland sweeps Eagles in battle of UMAC preseason favorites

ST. PAUL (Feb. 13, 2009) –
Northwestern College had its three-game winning streak snapped by Northland College on Friday night, losing its tie for second place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) in the process.  The Lumberjills from Ashland, Wis. committed a mere six turnovers while scoring 14 points on Northwestern's 12 mistakes in a 71-61 final.

Northland jumped out to a ten-point led within the first seven minutes of the game, increasing its advantage to 13 on back-to-back free throws by Chelsea Lundgren. Northwestern chipped away at the Lumberjills lead, cutting the advantage to two, courtesy of a jumper by Anna Weddig (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) (Merrill, Wis./Merrill). Northland stormed back, scoring six straight points to close out the half with a 30-22 lead.  

The Eagles returned from the locker room ready to play as it went on an impressive 11-0 run to start the second half. A three-pointer by Marcy Nelson (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) gave NWC its first and only lead at 37-35. The Lumberjills answered with eight consecutive points of their own finishing the night with a 71-61 victory over Northwestern.

Katie Dewitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) led NWC with 19 points on the night, along with Weddig's 12 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Northland's Lindsey Hamm ended with a game high 20 points, while Lundgren scored 17.

With tonight's victory, the Lumberjills take sole possession of second  place in the UMAC, leaving the Eagles alone in third. NWC will return to the gym on Saturday, Feb. 14 to compete against St. Scholastica at 3 p.m.
