Women's Hoops picks up 77-68 nonconference victory against Augsburg

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College women's basketball team used an 11-point scoring spree midway through the second half to sustain a 77-68 victory over Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles took advantage of Augsburg's full court defensive pressure to end the game with a 54 percent shooting performance and 52 points in the paint.

Down by five points early in the game, Northwestern battled back to lead 24-16 just ten minutes into the game. Augsburg answered with a 14-2 run to claim a 30-26 advantage before Becca Scheil (Blaine, Minn./Meadow Creek) drained a three-point shot in the final 30 seconds of the first half to give NWC a 36-34 lead at halftime.

Augsburg made a brief comeback in the early goings of the second period before the Eagles took over for good, extending their lead to as much as 14 points en route to the nine-point win.

Northwestern's defense held the Auggies to 35 percent shooting on the day while the home team outrebounded their opponents by 15 on the defensive glass.

Coming off a 31-point performance in Tuesday's loss at UW-Superior, Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) scored 24 points to go with 18 rebounds in Saturday's game. DeWitt, who averaged 27.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in two games this week, made 11 of her 21 shots from the field, dishing out a trio of assists and grabbing two steals in the game. 

Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) also turned in a solid performance for the Eagles, going 10-15 for 20 points and seven assists. Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) chipped in 13 points and five boards in the victory. Five Eagles had five or more rebounds in the game.

Shannon Renne led Augsburg with 20 points, while Brittany Dyshaw posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

With the win, Northwestern improves to 5-4 on the year. Augsburg slips to 1-4 overall. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 15, when they travel eastbound to face the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
