DeWitt scores 31 in 72-66 loss to UW-Superior

Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- While the Eagles maintained a lead throughout the first half, the Northwestern College women's basketball team couldn't sustain its advantage for a full 40 minutes on Wednesday evening, as NWC lost to the University of Wisconsin-Superior 72-66. The Eagles, who led 43-42 with 14:49 to play in the game, cut Superior's eight-point lead down to two points with less than a minute remaining, but the Yellow Jackets made all of their free throws from then on to post a six-point home court victory.

Much of Northwestern's offense came from Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), who scored a career-high 31 points to go with nine rebounds in the loss. DeWitt made half of her 26 attempts on the night.

As a team, Northwestern shot 46 percent from the floor with Superior sticking with the Eagles in terms of shooting throughout the entire contest. NWC scored 26 points in the paint compared to the Yellow Jackets' 10, but it was the home team's 48 percent mark from behind the three-point arc that pushed Superior over the top.

Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) joined DeWitt in double figures for Northwestern, scoring 14 points in the game while dishing out three assists. In addition to her efforts on offense, DeWitt was able to snag five steals as well.

Connie Urmanski and Kelsey Thingvold scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, to lead Superior. Urmanski made four of her eight attempts from downtown.

Northwestern slips to 4-4 overall in 2009-10, while UW-Superior improves to 4-3 with the win. The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 12, when they host Augsburg College in a matinee performance in the Ericksen Center. Tip-off time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
