Women's Hoops nets first win of 2009-10, beats North Central 78-47

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College women's basketball team earned its first win of the 2009-10 season on Friday night, defeating North Central University 78-47. The Eagles scored 39 points in each half while shooting 48.6 percent from the field in the victory.

NWC led by eight before four minutes had even ticked off the clock. The Eagles' lead crept to double digits as the first half wound down and the score read 39-21 after 20 minutes. The game's second period was much of the same, as all 10 Northwestern players who were dressed recorded 13 minutes or more throughout the 40-minute contest.

The Eagles took advantage of their size under the hoop, which was evidenced by their 56 points in the paint. Northwestern also added 14 second chance points, capitalizing on a 50-28 edge in the rebounding column.

Megan Myhre (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) posted a double-double in her Ericksen Center debut, scoring 10 points to go with 12 rebounds. Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) led all players with 20 points, contributing seven boards in the win. Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and Emily Henslin (Dodge Center, Minn./Triton) (Dodge Center, Minn./Triton) also scored 10 points or more in the game for Northwestern.

Liesch and DeWitt each dished out six assists in the win. DeWitt also had five steals, while Kelsey Kosman (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) stole four balls away from the Eagles' opponents. As a team, NWC held North Central to 28 percent shooting.

Elisabeth Trickey led North Central with 15 points. Amber Hutton added 12 points as the Rams slid to 0-2 on the season.

With the victory, Northwestern evens its early 2009-10 record at 1-1. The Eagles will have a chance to go 2-1 on the season on Saturday afternoon, when they host Finlandia University in the NWC Tip-Off Tournament Finale. That game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
