Volleyball makes quick work of St. Scholastica

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College volleyball team showed why it was the UMAC preseason No. 1 pick on Friday night, handing a 3-0 loss to St. Scholastica in a match that lasted less than an hour. Northwestern finished the 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 contest with a .211 attacking percentage.

The Eagles displayed an all-around performance, besting their opponents in each major category. While Northwestern hit over .200 for the match, St. Scholastica struggled on offense, mustering a -.028 attacking percentage. NWC also owned advantages in total kills (44-19), digs (57-43) and blocks (8-5.5).

The Koth sisters were at it again for Northwestern as each paced the team with double-digit kills and a plus-.200 attacking percentage. Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) led all players with 11 kills, while Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) added 10. Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) added six kills to go with a .214 hitting percentage.

Sandstrom and the elder Koth came up big on the block for the Eagles with five and four, respectively. The duo helped Northwestern finish the initial set in strong fashion with three straight blocks to get the Eagles to 25.

Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) led all players with 22 assists, while Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) added 16. Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) was NWC's digs leader, tallying 18 in the match. Danielle Rhodes (Iowa City, Iowa/City) (Iowa City, Iowa/City) returned from an ankle injury nicely, recording 15 digs.

Since Sep. 4, Northwestern continues to play without its full starting lineup due to injuries to Sarah Whitmore (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake Christian) (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake Christian), Rhodes and Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg).

Before the game, Northwestern announced that Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) surpassed Lindsey Sir's mark of 1,793 career digs during the team's recent road trip. Koth is now the all-time digs leader with 1,904.

The Eagles even their season record at 7-7 with the win while continuing their undefeated mark in the UMAC at 3-0. Northwestern has won 18 consecutive conference matches dating back to October of 2007. St. Scholastica dips to 7-11 (1-2 UMAC) following the loss.

NWC will be back on the court on Saturday as the Eagles host Northland College in the Ericksen Center. That match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
