Early goal lifts Minn.-Morris over Eagles

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- An early goal by the University of Minnesota, Morris haunted the Northwestern College men's soccer team, as the Cougars left Reynolds Field with a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. Kelsey Duerr's goal at the 6:37 mark was all Morris needed to remain undefeated in UMAC play, ending the Eagles' four-game unbeaten streak.

Duerr fired the game-winning shot from 30 yards out after receiving a pass from Patrick O'Connor. Neither team racked up a lot of shots on the cold day that began with snow in St. Paul. Morris, the conference leader, had seven shots to NWC's five. The Eagles boasted a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Danny King (Willmar, MN/Willmar High School) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) worked all 90 minutes in goal for Northwestern, but didn't face any shots on goal besides Duerr's lone attempt.

Northwestern falls to 4-8-1 (4-3-1 UMAC) with the loss, while Morris continues its unbeaten mark in the UMAC at 9-0 (10-3 overall) with the win. The Eagles will get a few days off before traveling north next weekend to play Northland College and the College of St. Scholastica. The Lumberjacks from Northland are Northwestern's first opponent, and the two teams will face off in a 3 p.m. bout on Friday, Oct. 16.
