Eagles run out of gas vs. Minnesota-Morris

MORRIS, Minn. (Jan. 25, 2009) – After playing the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference's (UMAC) top team evenly for 20 minutes, the Northwestern College women's basketball squad ran out of gas in the game's second half, and the Cougars with Morris ran off with a 72-61 win. The Eagles, fresh off a win after a long road trip to Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D., played their second straight game without starter Ashley Filipi (Fertile, Minn./Ada-Bourp) (Fertile, Minn./Ada-Borup) and frequently used Kelsey Kosman (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake).

Down by two points at halftime, Morris went on a tear to start the second period, scoring 20 straight points in seven minutes to lead 52-34. Although the Eagles were able to trim the Cougars lead to nine, whatever gas was left in the tank was gone, as Morris held on for a 72-61 final.

As a team, NWC shot 37 percent from the field while making 33 percent of its attempts from downtown. Morris finished with a 48 percent performance, much in part to its 13-for-24 second half.

Four Northwestern players saw over 30 minutes of court time, including Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) – all of whom posted double-digit points. DeWitt recorded 17 points and eight rebounds, while Liesch was close behind with 16 and four. Kendrick scored 13 points while grabbing nine boards to go with four blocks in the game.

Steph Roggenbuck scored 17 points to pace Morris (9-8 overall, 7-0 UMAC), while Jamie Rainey added 12 points.

Northwestern, whose winning streak hit five games before Saturday's loss, falls to 7-11 overall and 5-2 in UMAC play. The Eagles hope to regain their winning edge on Thursday, Jan. 29, when they travel to St. Bonifacius, Minn. to face Crown College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
