Eagles Win Key UMAC Contest vs. St. Scholastica

St. Paul, Minn., Oct. 5, 2007 – Playing in a hyped Upper Midwest Athletic Conference matchup, the Northwestern College volleyball team maintained their undefeated conference record Friday night, defeating the College of St. Scholastica 3-1 (30-22, 24-30, 30-27, 30-26). With a filled Ericksen Center crowd behind them, the Eagles rallied back from a five-point deficit late in the fourth game to win their sixth consecutive match.

Northwestern used every part of their game to win the match, owning advantages in total kills, hitting percentage and total blocks.

Sophomore Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) was superb in the match, recording 18 kills to go with a team-high 30 digs. Kathryne Engel (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran) (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran) followed close behind, tallying 14 kills. Sarah Whitmore (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake Christian) (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) and Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) also were in double digits for kills.

Running a successful 6-2 offense, NWC's Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and Slagter set the table with 33 and 24 assists, respectively.

Laura Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) had eight assisted blocks, while Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carleton) had seven to boost the Eagles' team total to 14.5 for the match.

With the win, Northwestern moves to 14-9 overall and 6-0 in UMAC play. The Eagles will take a short break before defending their undefeated conference record on Wednesday, when they host Crown College for a 7 p.m. contest in the Ericksen Center. Wednesday's games will be followed by more conference action at home versus Minnesota-Morris and Presentation on Friday and Saturday.
