Women's Basketball falls to Judson in Radisson Tip-Off finale

Box Score

ST. PAUL (Nov. 22, 2008) –
Judson University defeated Northwestern College 65-58 to win the Radisson Tip-Off Tournament women's championship on Saturday evening in the Ericksen Center. Judson, who shares the Eagle mascot with Northwestern, jumped out to a nine-point halftime lead and never looked back.

Judson built a solid eight-to-10 point lead within the game's first ten minutes, following the momentum created by guard Kirstin Johns. A successful three-point basket by Crystal Goodall gave Judson a 13-point lead with 1:59 to play in the first half before the Eagles owned a 32-23 lead at the half.

Northwestern trimmed Judson's lead to as little as six with less than a minute to play, but Johns converted six free throws to preserve the Eagles' ultimate 65-58 win.

Neither team had a very successful night in terms of shooting, as both Northwestern and Judson shot 34 percent. Judson's eight turnovers, compared to Northwestern's 18, were the key to the Eagles' win. Northwestern couldn't convert its 17-rebound advantage into points, as Judson prevailed down the stretch to claim the tournament championship in 65-58 fashion.

Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had 17 points to pace Northwestern, while teammate Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) added 16. Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) led the team with 10 rebounds, while Melissa Moore (Niagara, Wis./Florence) (Niagara, Wis./Florence) had nine.

Following the game, both DeWitt and Liesch were selected to the all-tournament team.

Judson had three players hit double figures, including Johns, who finished with 16 points.

Northwestern (1-3) will take a few days off before hitting the road for the first time this season, as the Eagles will face Augsburg College in Minneapolis on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
