Box Score

ST. PAUL (Nov. 15, 2008) –The Pipers from Hamline University handed Northwestern College a 71-64 loss in a packed Ericksen Center, as both teams opened their season on Saturday. Down by 10, the Eagles battled back to a 60-60 tie with three minutes left to play before HU pulled away with an 11-4 run to close out the game.

Hamline jumped out to leads of five, seven and nine throughout the first half until NWC went on a 11-1 run to tie the game at 23-23 with 4:15 to play in the period. After Marcy Nelson (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) converted a three-point attempt to give the Eagles a one-point lead, the Pipers closed out the initial 20 minutes with a 34-29 lead.

Six minutes into the second half, Hamline pushed its lead to 10 on a jumper by Olivia Omayayi. The comeback kids in Northwestern did their thing again, taking a one-point advantage on back-to-back free throws by Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) with 11 minutes remaining in the game. Hamline kept the score close throughout the next nine minutes until their run in the final two minutes produced the 71-64 final. The Pipers capitalized on each of their shots from the charity stripe in that time period, making all of their nine free throw attempts after tying the game at 60-60.

The Pipers held a strong advantage in overall shooting, as they maintained a 39.3 percentage throughout the night. Northwestern capitalized with a 28.4 percent effort. The Eagles out-rebounded their opponents 50-44 overall and 23-8 on the offensive glass. NWC also won the turnover battle, 10-14.

DeWitt, a transfer from Drake University, had quite the night in her Northwestern debut, posting a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Nelson shot 50 percent from behind the 3-point line, producing 11 points for the Eagles. Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) also added eight points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Hamline had three players in double figures, including Mary Wilkowski, who led all players with 18 points.

Following the loss, Northwestern begins its 2008-09 season at 0-1. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. That game, which could be a preview of a weekend contest between the two teams, will tip off at 7 p.m. in the Ericksen Center. River Falls is one of three teams who will visit Northwestern's campus for the Radisson Tip-Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22.
