ST. PAUL, Minn. (Jan. 11, 2008) – Hot shooting propelled the Northwestern College women's basketball team to their second consecutive win Friday evening, as they handed the visiting Saints from St. Scholastica a 69-55 defeat. With the victory, the Eagles continue their undefeated streak in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action at 2-0.
The one-two combo of
Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and
Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) paced Northwestern, as Liesch led the team in scoring with 13 points, while Kendrick contributed 12.
Down 10-9 after seven minutes passed, Northwestern went on a tear, outscoring St. Scholastica 25-11 throughout the rest of the half to claim a 34-21 lead. The Eagles kept pace with the Saints in the second half, nailing four of their eight three-point attempts and 51.7 percent of their overall shots from the field in the final 20 minutes to wrap up UMAC Win No. 2, 69-55.
Northwestern made almost half of their attempts from the floor, shooting 48.3 percent, including a 42.1 mark from behind the 3-point arc. St. Scholastica was only able to counter with a 32.8 percent performance, and a difficult 16.7 rate from long range.
NWC out-scored the bigger St. Scholastica team 26-20 in the paint.
In addition to Liesch and Kendrick's performances, head coach Linda Schuck received great efforts out of a host of Eagles.
Marcy Nelson (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) chipped in 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting while
Kelly Zuleger (Cresco, IA/Crestwood High School) (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) and
Katie Tuseth (White Bear Lake, MN/White Bear Lake High School) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear) added eight and seven.
Shelby Baker (Winona, MN/Winona High School) (Winona, Minn./Winona) was NWC's top rebounder, pulling down seven boards.
Whitney Latham and Kirsten Haukom led St. Scholastica with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Katie Cross brought down 10 rebounds.
At 4-9 in 2007-08, Northwestern will hardly receive a break before hosting the UMAC's preseason favorite in Northland College. A clash between the LumberJills and NWC tips off on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 3 p.m. in the Ericksen Center.
