Eagle Women Fall to Simpson in Season Debut

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 16, 2007
– The Northwestern College women's basketball team suffered a loss at the hands of 16th-ranked Simpson College on Friday night, falling 44-68 in their 2007-08 season debut. Head coach Linda Schuck's team saw some strong areas in the Northwestern Tip-Off game to go with a lot of improvements that need to be made.

Freshman Rachael Bohnen (Grand Marais, MN/Cook County High School) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) made quite a personal debut for herself, leading the Eagles with 13 points off the bench. Bohnen was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and recorded two steals in 19 minutes.

Northwestern stayed with the Storm early on, owning a 12-11 lead within the game's first five minutes. Simpson began to slowly pull away as the first half continued, building an eight-point lead at 22-14 with 8:54 to play in the period. By halftime, the Storm was on the top part of an 11-point margin, winning 33-22 at the break.

Things didn't get much better for the Eagles in the second half, as Simpson started right where they left off. Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial)'s (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) three-pointer at 15:50 was Northwestern's only points in the period's initial seven minutes, as the Eagles yielded a 20-point lead with 11:48 left in the game. Simpson built their lead up to 27 soon thereafter, sealing the likely victory for the Top 25 team that resulted in a 68-44 final.

Northwestern's 30 turnovers in the game didn't help themselves, as the Storm scored 20 points off of the Eagles' mishaps. Simpson owned a huge advantage in the paint, scoring 32 points down low, compared to only 16 for the Eagles. The Storm also held a 13-3 margin in second chance points.

Simpson had two players in double figures, as Whitney Franker and Jayna Fischbach had 12 and 11 points, respectively.

After Bohnen, Sophomore Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) was Northwestern's next highest scorer, tallying eight points on 4-of-6 shooting. Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) also contributed eight points in the loss. Kendrick led the Eagles in rebounding, pulling down six boards.

With the loss, Northwestern falls to 0-1 in the young season, and will compete for third place in the NWC Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday. The Eagles will face off against Grand View College, who lost their game to Jamestown earlier in the afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Ericksen Center.
