ST. PAUL, Minn. - In his final outing at Reynolds Field, University of Northwestern Baseball senior
Dreyer Homan (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) delivered a curtain-call worthy performance.
The flamethrower from Clara City made quick work of Martin Luther College, throwing a complete-game, two-hit shutout that took just one hour and 45 minutes. While recording just four hits themselves, the Eagles won 4-0, largely on the back of Homan's 12 strikeouts. He leads the UMAC with 45 strikeouts in conference play, and 72 on the season.
Northwestern drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning when
Tony Greco (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) doubled to the corner in left field, and eventually scored on an
Alex Klein (Olathe, Kans./Olathe Northwest) sacrifice fly. UNW didn't record another hit until the fifth inning, when
Parker Huebsch (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) led off the frame with his second single of the afternoon. A hit-by-pitch and a perfect bunt single by
Jeremiah Holmes (West Covina, Calif./San Dimas) loaded the bases, and a
Davis Winter (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) grounder to second brought a run home.
Braden Storts (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka), making his return to the lineup after a March 20th injury, drove in a run via a sacrifice fly on the next at-bat to make it 3-0 in favor of the hosts. That three-run cushion was more than enough for Homan, who continued to mow down the Knights. The Eagles scored the game's final run in the bottom of the seventh inning on another sacrifice fly off the bat of Storts, and Homan shut the door the rest of the way to seal the 4-0 home win.
Homan moves to 4-1 on the season after the complete-game, two-hit, 12-strikeout performance. Huebsch was the lone Eagle to record multiple hits, while Greco had the only extra-base hit. Storts finished with a game-high two RBI, and Winter and Klein each added one.
Northwestern will celebrate its eight graduating players in a Senior Day ceremony prior to Saturday's 1:00 PM doubleheader with Martin Luther.
