SUPERIOR, Wis. - The University of Northwestern returned to the field in Superior, Wisconsin, for the final game of the series against UWS. Scoring was limited throughout the entire game as both teams combined for nine hits. It only took two hits for UNW as they scored two runs via home runs for a final of 2-1.
The Yellowjackets got on the board in the opening inning and held on to a one-run lead for the next five innings. UNW had several opportunities to tie the game through those innings, including a lead-off double from
Lani Schoper (Madison Lake, Minn./Mankato West) in the top of the fifth.
The Eagles finally put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth with a long ball from
Hannah Storey (Big Lake, Minn./Monticello), her 4th of the season. In the bottom of the frame, UW-Superior threatened to take the lead on a wild pitch, but Northwestern tagged the runner out at home to keep the score even at one.
Ireland Strubbe (Chandler, Ariz./Valley Christian) struck out the next batter to close the inning.
In the top of the final inning, Schoper hit her second home run of the season to take the lead with the Eagles needing just three more outs. UWS got two runners on base with one out before a pop fly and a strikeout shut the door for an Eagle win.
Schoper led the team, going 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and a home run. Storey recorded the other home run, going 1-3 on the day.
Bryn Anderson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) and
Kate Trump (Faribault, Minn/Bethlehem Academy) recorded the other two hits of the game for Northwestern.
