Nine-Run Inning Lifts Eagles Over UW-La Crosse Before Falling to UW-Platteville in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn.  - The University of Northwestern Softball Team made the trip to Rochester on Saturday to face a pair of WIAC opponents, coming away with a gritty 9-7 win over UW-La Crosse, which marks the first Northwestern win against UWL. UNW then faced UW-Platteville for the first time, falling in a tough 8-7 walk-off to the UW-Platteville Pioneers.

GAME 1: UW-LA CROSSE EAGLES

UNW loaded the bases in the first but didn't break through until the third. The Eagles exploded for nine runs in the inning, sending three different La Crosse pitchers to the circle. Lani Schoper (Madison Lake, Minn./Mankato West) started the rally with a single and used her speed to create chaos on the bases. Bryn Anderson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) followed with a base hit, and the two executed a double steal that got Northwestern on the board. Emma Edwards (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) added an RBI single. Gabrielle Keith (Marble Rock, Iowa/Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock) singled, Kate Trump (Faribault, Minn/Bethlehem Academy) walked to load the bases, and Trista Oberle (Hudson, Wis./Homeschool) worked a walk to score another run. Hannah Lexvold (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake Area) came up clutch with a two-RBI single. After another walk extended the inning, Schoper picked up an RBI of her own. Emma Westrate (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek) drew a bases-loaded walk, Anderson reached in a play that allowed another run to score, and Edwards capped the inning with a sacrifice groundout to plate the ninth run.

After that huge frame, the Eagles continued to threaten but stayed at nine runs.

Kailynn Duncan (Barron, Wis./Barron) made her first collegiate start in the circle and was steady early, allowing just one run through four innings. La Crosse chipped away late with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to cut the lead to three.

Emma Morrissey (Wasilla, Alas./Colony) and Addisyn Hansen (Tea, S.D./Tea Area) came on in relief, and Hansen shut the door in the seventh to secure the 9-7 win and earn the save.

Schoper led the way at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Edwards and Lexvold each drove in two. Westrate, Anderson, and Oberle each added one RBI. Duncan struck out four over five innings to earn her first collegiate win.

GAME TWO: UW-PLATTEVILLE PIONEERS

Unlike the first game, the Eagles spread out their runs through five innings for a back-and-forth battle all the way to the final inning.

Schoper once again set the tone, reaching base and eventually scoring the first run of the game thanks to productive at-bats behind her. Platteville answered with a grand slam and another run in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 5-1 lead.

The Eagles left two on base in the second but kept fighting. In the third, Anderson led off with a single and moved into scoring position after Edwards walked. Trump advanced the runners, and Keith delivered an RBI single. A passed ball allowed another run to move into scoring position before Oberle drove one in to bring UNW within three.

Trump launched a solo home run to deep center in the fifth to go down two.

In the sixth, the Eagles tied it up. Schoper and Morrissey scored, and Anderson came through with a two-RBI single to even the score at six.

Northwestern grabbed the lead in the seventh when Westrate and Hansen (pinch-hitting) worked walks. Hannah Storey (Big Lake, Minn./Monticello) re-entered to run and moved to second on Anderson's single, which also brought Westrate home for the go-ahead run.

With a Northwestern 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, Platteville responded with two runs in its final at-bat to walk it off, 8-7.

Anderson had a big second game, going 3-5 with three RBI. Schoper scored twice. Edwards, Trump, Keith, and Oberle each had an RBI, with Trump's coming on her home run. Strubbe went the distance in the circle, facing 34 batters. She struck out two and battled through seven innings of work.

Northwestern now sits at 2-4 on the season and will head to Florida for its Spring Break trip, where the Eagles will play 10 games. They'll open the trip on March 6 against Emmanuel College at 10:00 AM Eastern Time.
