Men's Track and Field Continues to Find Success at Mayday Classic in Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The University of Northwestern Men's Track and Field team competed at the Mayday Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Superior, continuing to build momentum as athletes dropped time after time throughout the afternoon.

John Shevchuk (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) highlighted the meet with a standout performance in the 60 meters. For the third consecutive week, Shevchuk lowered his time, first posting a season-best 7.25 in the qualifying round before shaving off another .09 seconds in the finals to clock a 7.14. The time earned him first place in the meet, which marks the men's team's first victory of the season, and currently ranks him second in the UMAC standings. Shevchuk also competed in the 200 meters, placing third with another season-best performance of 23.38.

Will Dorch (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) joined Shevchuk in the 200 meters and recorded a season-best of his own with a time of 24.64, good for fifth place. Peter Kephart (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) placed 10th in the 800 meters with a finish of 2:15.06, and Caleb Phillips (Poplar, Wis./South Shore) led the Eagles in the 5,000 meters, also finishing 10th in 17:32.83.

In the field events, Reid Jelks (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) paced Northwestern in the long jump with a leap of 5.15 meters (16'10.75") to finish ninth. Cody Johnson (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) followed in 10th at 4.89 meters (16'0.5"), and Samuel Otis (Shoreview, Minn./Homeschool) placed 11th with a jump of 4.52 meters (14'10").

Other notable performances:

  • Tyler Dueber (Bloomington, Minn./Homeschool), season best in the mile (4:49.50) and personal record in the 1000m (2:51.39).
  • Otis, personal record in the mile (5:03.76) and personal record in the 1000m (2:57.21)
