UNW Women Stifled in Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern Women's Basketball team made its way north Wednesday night to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior, in search of its first conference win of the season. Unfortunately, the temperature outside reflected the Eagles' shooting night, as they shot 29.8% from the field and 15.8% from three on their way to a 61-42 loss in a game which neither team was firing on all cylinders.

Northwestern made just four field goals in the first half—all courtesy of Carli Elrod (Lindstrom, Minn./Spectrum) (nine points), as UW-Superior took a 26-15 lead into halftime. UNW threatened early in the third quarter, as a Marin Blom (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) three-pointer and an Emma Korinek (New Brighton, Minn./Concordia Academy) layup made it an eight-point game, but the Yellowjackets were able to push the margin back to double digits, where it would remain for the rest of the game. Elrod and Ella Frazier (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) each scored three more points in the quarter and Olivia Heikes (Braham, Minn./Braham Area) knocked down a jumper, bit UWS held a 46-30 advantage heading into the fourth. The lead grew to 21 before Frazier started to cook, scoring the Eagles' next eight points. She would score the game's final points as well, resulting in a 61-42 final score.

Frazier led all scorers with 15 points, adding four rebounds and three steals. Elrod contributed 12 points and four boards, while Blom chipped in nine points and five rebounds. Korinek finished with four rebounds and three steals, and Katelyn Lindberg (Clearwater, Minn./Monticello) dished out a game-high four assists.

Northwestern will be back at home Saturday, January 24th for its annual Hoops Hysteria game, pitting the Eagles Crown, who is also in search of its first UMAC win. Tip-off in the Ericksen Center is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
