SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team faced a tough test on the road Tuesday, taking on UMAC powerhouse and previously ranked Wisconsin-Superior. The Yellowjackets struck early and often, scoring in the second minute and adding eight more goals before the final buzzer. Northwestern found a goal of their own in the 55th minute to bring the score to a final of 1-9.
The Eagles generated opportunities in the opening frame. In the 23rd minute, Jay'ce Jones (Marina del Rey, Calif./Palisades Charter) threaded a ball forward to Jared Mojardin (Denver, Colo./Northeast Early College), who took space and fired a shot that was saved by the UWS goalkeeper. Later, Jones found another chance inside the box, but his shot sailed high after contact from a defender. UW-Superior started strong in the opening 45 minutes as they scored 3 goals to take a 3-0 lead into the break.
Superior extended its lead in the 52nd minute, but Northwestern answered quickly with its highlight of the day. After Jones was fouled near the edge of the box in the 55th minute, Simeon Friesen (Mounds View, Minn./Homeschool) stepped up to take the free kick. The junior has been a calm, cool, and collected presence for UNW and has scored twice this season, both from set pieces. Tonight was no different as Friesen placed an unstoppable strike into the top left corner, delivering the lone goal for the Eagles. Despite the momentum swing, the Yellowjackets' attack proved relentless, netting five more goals down the stretch to seal a 9-1 final.
Friesen led the UNW offense with a goal on two shots, both on target. Jones also recorded two shots, while Mojardin, Troy Johnson (Killeen, Texas/Killeen), and David Kobielush (Chaska, Minn./Southwest Christian) each tallied one shot on goal. Hayden DeAnnuntis (Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale) and Georden Tschida (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) shared the load in goal as DeAnnuntis played 71 minutes and grabbed two saves, before Tschida took over for the final 19 minutes.
Northwestern will return home for its first home conference match of the season. They will take on the Knights from Martin Luther at Reynolds Field on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM on the 27th.
