ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Softball team traveled to Crown College for the final series of the season before the UMAC Tournament next weekend.
Kate Beer (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) was the first Eagle to make it to first base in the top of the 3rd after three and out innings in the opening two frames. Riley Summers (Fontana, Wis./Big Foot) followed suit by hitting a base knock to right field. Then the team leader in doubles, Sydney Lane (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian), added another one to her record book, bringing Beer home to level the score at 1. The Polars stopped all the UNW momentum with a double play, ending the inning. Defensively, UNW found their second three-up-three-down inning in the bottom of the third.
Anderson clipped a double to begin the top of the fourth. Emma Edwards (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) made good contact on a pitch, making its way to the warning track before being caught, leaving Anderson on base and the score in a deadlock. Crown found a run in the next two innings to take the lead 3-1.
Northwestern was unable to overcome the deficit and lost 3-1. Lane, Anderson, Edwards, and Beer went 1-3 at the plate. Emma Heffron (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) went the length in the circle for the Eagles and struck out 6 batters, surrendering 3 unearned runs.
UNW will look to bounce back against the Polars in the doubleheader tomorrow at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
