Short-handed Eagles Lose at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A busy final week of the regular season continued Wednesday for the University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team as it made the short trek south on Snelling to take on Hamline University. After earning a conference win over Minnesota Morris on Tuesday, the Eagles were not able to do the same in Wednesday's non-conference bout. The Pipers won all nine matches played en route to a 7-0 sweep of UNW, who was short-handed with Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) out of the lineup.

Early returns in doubles matches were not favorable for Northwestern, as Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) lost 0-6 at No. 2, and Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Hannah Hyttsten (Becker, Minn./Becker) suffered a 1-6 defeat in the No. 3 match. Abby and Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) kept things much more competitive at No. 1 doubles, but ultimately fell, 4-6.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, their luck did not improve much in singles play. Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Sullivan lost by matching 2-6, 2-6 scores at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) dropped her No. 1 singles match by a 0-6, 2-6 score, while Swigart lost 1-6, 1-6 in the No. 4 match, which is where Ross typically plays. While Jarchow suffered a 1-6, 4-6 defeat at No. 3 singles, Hyttsten showed some grit at No. 6. The freshman lost a tight first set, 6-7, and fell in the second, 2-6.

UNW will have the day off on Thursday before traveling to Saint Benedict for a dual on Friday, beginning at 4:00 PM.
