COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – On the eve of a pivotal final day of conference play, the University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team played one final non-conference match at the College of Saint Benedict. In what officially marked the middle of a five days, five matches stretch for the Eagles, they were defeated by the Bennies, 0-7.
In doubles play,
Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and
Yerly Rothwell (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area) suffered a 0-8 defeat at No. 3, while Abby and
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) fell 2-8 in the No. 1 match. At No. 2 doubles,
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) fought hard but came up just short, losing 6-8.
Saint Ben's continued to roll as singles matches began. Sullivan lost 0-6, 1-6 at No. 5, while Rothwell fell 2-6, 1-6 in the No. 6 match. At No. 1 singles,
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) was defeated 2-6, 3-6, and Swigart dropped her No. 4 match, 4-6, 1-6.
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) dropped the No. 2 match, 4-6, 5-7, while Jarchow battled back from a 0-6 loss in the first set at No. 3 singles to win the second, 2-6. The tiebreak did not go the senior's way, as she fell 6-10.
UNW will double dip on Saturday to close out both UMAC play and the regular season. The Eagles will host Crown at 1:00 PM and Martin Luther at 4:30, after a ceremony to honor their three graduating players:
