ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team bounced back after a loss last weekend in impressive fashion on Tuesday, defeating the University of Minnesota Morris, 6-1, to improve to 2-1 in UMAC play. The win kicked off a busy week in which UNW will play five matches in five days to close out the regular season.
The Eagles got the ball rolling in doubles matches with 6-2 wins from their No. 2 (
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool),
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne)) and No. 3 (
Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park),
Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti)) teams. With the doubles point already in hand, the No. 1 team of
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and
Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) came up short, losing 5-7.
Singles matches went Northwestern's way as well, beginning with a 6-1, 6-2 win for Ross at No. 4. Sullivan won her No. 6 match 6-2, 6-3, then
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) won by the inverse at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the team win for the Eagles. Swigart won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 before UNW's lone loss came in the No. 2 match when
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) fell, 4-6, 6-4, 11-13. Jarchow concluded the day with an exciting 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 3 singles.
The Eagles will have a quick turnaround before taking on Hamline down the road at 2:30 PM on Wednesday.
