OWATONNA, Minn. – Coming off a 2-0 Saturday in Owatonna, the University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team was back in the Owl City on Wednesday morning for a match with Wartburg College. The Eagles were unable to sustain their momentum as they fell by a 1-6 margin to the Knights.
The first match to conclude was No. 3 doubles, where
Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and
Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) lost, 3-6. Reigning UMAC Player of the Week
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) were next off following a 4-6 loss at No. 2 doubles. Despite Wartburg already clinching the doubles point, Northwestern's No. 1 doubles team of
Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) was able to secure a 6-4 win.
Majerus was the first Eagle to finish up singles play, losing 1-6, 1-6 at No. 3. Jarchow lost his No. 2 match, 3-6, 0-6 before Haack got UNW on the board with a 7-5, 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot. Thomforde suffered a 1-6, 2-6 defeat at No. 4 singles, and Jergenson was taken down, 2-6, 4-6 at No. 5. Swigart battled in a tight No. 5 singles match, but ultimately fell by a 6-2, 6-7, 9-11 score.
As long as Mother Nature signs off, Northwestern will have its home opener Saturday, April 5
th at 3:00 PM against Concordia Moorhead.
