Men's Tennis Rolls to Pair of Sweeps

WACONIA, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team was dialed in Saturday as it took on a pair of familiar foes. In its UMAC opener, Northwestern swept Bethany Lutheran College, 7-0, before beating Crown College by the same score in a non-conference bout.

Match One: Bethany Lutheran College Vikings

The morning match was against a shorthanded Bethany Lutheran squad, which UNW took advantage of by winning every point that was on the table. With the No. 3 doubles match already in hand by default, the No. 1 (Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls)) and No. 2 (Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston), Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park)) teams won by matching 6-1 scores.

The Eagles had little trouble in the four singles matches that were played, as well. Swigart and Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively to solidify the win since the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches went to Northwestern by default. Haack won 6-1, 6-0 in his No. 1 match, then Jarchow capped off the 7-0 team win with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

Match Two: Crown College Polars

After the quick and painless win in Mankato, UNW headed to Waconia to take on a full-strength Crown team and won by the same 7-0 score. The No. 1 (Haack, Jarchow) and No. 3 (DJ Stumpf (Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray), Sam Kettelhut (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View)) doubles teams quickly earned Northwestern its first point with matching 6-2 wins. Thomforde and Jergenson combined for a 6-3 win in the No. 2 match.

The scorching hot play continued into singles matches as every Eagle won in straight sets. Jarchow and Majerus won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, then Haack took care of business in his No. 1 match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. A 6-2, 6-3 win for Thomdorde at No. 4 singles was followed by a 6-2, 6-0 triumph for Ian Barber (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) at No. 6. Rounding out the day was Swigart, who won 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot.
