COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team traveled to Saint John's University on Tuesday for a date with the Johnnies after Monday's originally-scheduled match was postponed. The extra day of rest did not help the Eagles as much as they had hoped, as the day ended with a 0-7 loss.
The No. 2 (
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne),
Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston)) and No. 3 (
Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park),
Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park)) doubles teams lost 8-2 and 8-3, respectively, to give the doubles point to Saint John's.
Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) claimed an 8-5 win at No. 1 to give Northwestern a little momentum.
As singles began, SJU flexed its muscles. Jergenson was first off with a 2-6, 0-6 loss at No. 6, shortly before Jarchow came off with a 1-6, 0-6 defeat. Majerus lost 2-6, 3-6 at No. 3 singles, while Swigart fell 3-6, 4-6 in the No. 5 match. Thomforde came up short at No. 4, losing 2-6, 3-6, and Haack was more competitive at No. 1 singles, but ultimately lost 6-7, 2-6.
UNW will play its home opener on Wednesday at 4:00 PM against Concordia-Moorhead. Come on out and support your Eagles!
