UNW Women Come up Empty in Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – After opening UMAC play last weekend with a 7-0 sweep of Bethany Lutheran, the University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team faced its toughest conference test on Friday: the 15-5 (3-0 UMAC) University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. Northwestern suffered the opposite fate of last weekend's conference opener, falling by a 0-7 score.

While doubles matches produced UNW's only match win of the day, UW-Superior quickly clinched the doubles point with 6-0 wins over Northwestern's No. 2 (Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool), Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne)) and No. 3 (Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park)) teams. Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) produced the win, by a 6-1 margin, at No. 1 doubles.

Singles matches ended in a clean sweep for the Yellowjackets, with all but one occurring in straight sets. Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Sullivan each lost 2-6, 1-6 at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively, while Swigart suffered a 1-6, 1-6 defeat in the No. 5 match. Ross fell 3-6, 2-6 at No. 4 singles, and Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) was defeated by a 3-6, 4-6 margin in the No. 1 spot. Making her return to the lineup from injury, Jarchow took set one of her No. 3 singles match, 6-2, before falling 2-6 and 3-6 in sets two and three.

The Eagles will continue UMAC play on Tuesday, April 22nd with a 4:00 PM home match against Minnesota Morris.
