SUPERIOR, Wis. – After opening UMAC play last weekend with a 7-0 sweep of Bethany Lutheran, the University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team faced its toughest conference test on Friday: the 15-5 (3-0 UMAC) University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. Northwestern suffered the opposite fate of last weekend's conference opener, falling by a 0-7 score.
While doubles matches produced UNW's only match win of the day, UW-Superior quickly clinched the doubles point with 6-0 wins over Northwestern's No. 2 (
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool),
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne)) and No. 3 (
Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti),
Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park)) teams.
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and
Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) produced the win, by a 6-1 margin, at No. 1 doubles.
Singles matches ended in a clean sweep for the Yellowjackets, with all but one occurring in straight sets.
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Sullivan each lost 2-6, 1-6 at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively, while Swigart suffered a 1-6, 1-6 defeat in the No. 5 match. Ross fell 3-6, 2-6 at No. 4 singles, and
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) was defeated by a 3-6, 4-6 margin in the No. 1 spot. Making her return to the lineup from injury, Jarchow took set one of her No. 3 singles match, 6-2, before falling 2-6 and 3-6 in sets two and three.
The Eagles will continue UMAC play on Tuesday, April 22
nd with a 4:00 PM home match against Minnesota Morris.
