Eagles Win Every Match in 2-0 Saturday Slate

WACONIA, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team began its conference season on Saturday with a dominant, 7-0 win at Bethany Lutheran College, and closed out the day with a 7-0, non-conference win at Crown College. The Eagles won every match they played in the Saturday sweep.

Match One: Bethany Lutheran College Vikings

Abby and Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) cruised to a dominant, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 (Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central), Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park)) and No. 3 (Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), Hannah Hyttsten (Becker, Minn./Becker)) teams each won by matching 6-2 scores to claim the doubles point.

Northwestern's dominance bled over into singles play, beginning with a 6-2, 6-1 win for Ross at No. 3. Sullivan won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, then Swigart picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win in the No. 4 match. A 6-4, 6-1 win by Yerly Rothwell (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area) at No. 6 was followed up by Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) coming from behind to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the No. 2 spot. Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-6 win at No. 1 singles.

Match Two: Crown College Polars

After traveling from Mankato to Waconia for its second match of the day, UNW picked up where it left off, once again winning every match against Crown. The match did not count toward conference play, as the two squads will face off one more time this season on Northwestern's campus. The Johnson sisters picked up another 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Yerly Rothwell (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area) earned a 6-2 win in the No. 3 match to clinch the doubles point. Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) and Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) finished off the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 2.

The winning ways seemed contagious as singles matches commenced, kicked off by Ross's 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 match. Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles before Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1. At No. 4 singles, Swigart took home the final two-set win of the day by a 6-4, 6-0 score. Sullivan won 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 in the No. 5 match, while Hannah Hyttsten (Becker, Minn./Becker) brought the sweep home with a hard-earned, 5-7, 6-2, 10-2 win at No. 6.
