Women's Tennis Rolls Past Ripon

OWATONNA, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team made the trip down to Owatonna to take on Ripon College on a chilly Saturday morning. Coming into the match fresh after a great week of practice, the women rolled to a final score of 6-1.

The Eagles were firing on all cylinders today, sweeping and securing the doubles point to go up 1-0. The No. 3 doubles team of Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) took their match in commanding fashion, owning the net and taking the win, 6-2. No. 2 doubles (Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne)) was not far behind, taking their match 6-3. Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) got off to a slow start but won four-straight to come back from a 0-3 deficit and ultimately secure the 6-4 win.

Going into singles, the Eagles kept the pedal to the metal, dropping only one singles point. Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Jarchow secured the first wins at No. 1 and No. 3, both taking down their opponents 6-3, 6-1. Hannah Hyttsten (Becker, Minn./Becker) battled for the clinch at No. 6, splitting sets and going to a tiebreak. The freshman ultimately prevailed with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 final score. At No. 2, Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) took care of business, serving aces left and right to take home a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Ross came out the gates firing, but her opponent at No. 4 was not going down without a fight. After securing set one 6-0, Ross battled in set two, securing a huge break to finish 7-5. Sullivan at No. 5 fought to a 5-7 result in set one, but ultimately fell in set two, 2-6.

The Eagles are back in Owatonna on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. to take on the Wartburg College Knights.
