Eagles Come up Short against Wartburg

OWATONNA, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team was back in Owatonna on Wednesday morning for a dual with Wartburg College. The Knights were able to prevail with a 5-2 win over the Eagles.

Wartburg set the tone early by claiming two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) fell 2-6 at No. 1 doubles before Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) forced a decisive No. 2 match with a 6-3 win at No. 3. There was no shortage of drama as Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) battled to a 6-6 tiebreak in the No. 2 spot. The Knights were able to get the job done with a 7-1 tiebreak win to earn the doubles point.

Northwestern was able to get a couple points on the board once singles matches began. After Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) dropped her No. 1 match, 1-6, 2-6, Jarchow picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3. Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool), fresh off a ninth-place golf finish in Texas on Tuesday, lost by a 4-6, 5-7 score at No. 2 singles, then Ross suffered a 3-6, 2-6 defeat in the No. 4 match. After Sullivan lost 2-6, 1-6 at No. 5, Swigart delivered UNW's final win of the day, 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 in the No. 6 spot.

As long as weather cooperates, the Eagles will make their home debut on Saturday, April 5th with matches against UW-River Falls (10:30 AM) and Concordia Moorhead (3:00 PM).
