UNW Women go Winless in Saturday Doubleheader

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team was back in the Midwest for a pair of matches on the campus of Cornell College on Saturday. The Eagles fell 0-7 to Loras College and 2-5 to the hosts, Cornell.

Match One: Loras College Duhawks

The first match of the day was a rough one for UNW, as the Eagles dropped every match in the contest. Beginning with doubles play, the No. 1 team of Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) was first off with a 2-6 loss. Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) lost 4-6 in the No. 2 match, while Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) were out-lasted in a tight battle by a 5-7 score at No. 3 doubles.

The singles matches didn't go much better for Northwestern, as only one Eagle was able to win a set against the gritty Duhawks. Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) fell 0-6, 2-6 at No. 2, while Jarchow dropped her No. 3 match, 0-6, 1-6. At No. 5 singles, Swigart suffered a 2-6, 0-6 defeat, and Sullivan lost 0-6, 5-7 in the No. 6 spot. Abby Johnson's (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) No. 1 singles match ended in a 2-6, 4-6 loss, but Ross was able to take her No. 4 match to a tiebreak, ultimately coming up short by a 2-6, 7-6, 7-10 margin.

Match Two: Cornell College Rams

The Eagles showed much more fight against the 13-5 Cornell Rams in the nightcap. After Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Yerly Rothwell (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area) lost 3-6 at No. 3 doubles, Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) were able to pick up a 6-4 win in the No. 2 match. With the doubles point in the balance, the No. 1 team of Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) came up just short, suffering a 4-6 defeat.

Singles play began with a 2-6, 1-6 loss for Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) in the No. 2 match and a 3-6, 2-6 defeat for Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) at No. 1. Jarchow was able to notch a 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 victory in the No. 3 spot to get UNW on the board, but it was followed by a 5-7, 1-6 loss by Hannah Hyttsten (Becker, Minn./Becker) at No. 6 singles. Ross dropped another heartbreaker in her No. 4 match (6-7, 6-4, 9-11), but Sullivan ended the day on a high note, playing up one spot from her normal No. 6 position and taking home a 6-7, 7-5, 10-4 win at No. 5.
