ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team took the trek down to sunny Orlando, Florida for their annual spring break trip and started a week of competition with a few tough opponents. In Monday's doubleheader, they first fell 0-7 to Millsaps College, then 1-6 to Roger Williams University.
Match One: Millsaps College Majors
Securing the doubles point turned out to be a battle against Millsaps. No. 3 Doubles (
Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and
Ian Barber (Worthington, Minn./Worthington)) went down early, falling 1-6. No. 2 doubles (
Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and
Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston)) was done soon after, rolling to a 6-1 win, which brought the doubles point to a deciding match at No. 1.
Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) had a tight battle, bringing the match to a tiebreaker. Unfortunately for Northwestern, MC was able to rally and secure a 7-2 tiebreak win to secure the point.
Haack had another tight match at No. 1 singles, bringing his first set to another tiebreaker, but ultimately fell 0-7. His second set was still a battle, but ended with a 4-6 result.
Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) also had a battle at No. 4, but ultimately lost 3-6, 4-6.
Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) had a similar score at No. 5, losing 2-6, 3-6. No. 2 singles was secured quickly, with
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) falling 1-6, 1-6.
Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) battled to a 3-6 score in the first set of his No. 3 singles match but fell 0-6 in the second. A bright spot for the Eagles was
Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) at No. 6 singles, who stayed consistent and took care of business to secure an 0-6, 1-6 win.
Match Two: Roger Williams University Hawks
The Eagles then took on the Roger Williams University Hawks to close out day one of competition. Doubles scores were similar across the board, with No. 1 (Haack and Jarchow) and No. 2 (Majerus and Thomforde) finishing with a 3-6 result. No. 3 doubles (Jergenson and Swigart) ended at 2-6.
Jarchow at No. 2 started off singles with another 1-6, 1-6 loss. Haack was not far behind at No. 1, falling in the first, 1-6, but rallying to a 4-6 second set. Next was Majerus playing No. 3, who made set one interesting with a 5-7 score, but ultimately lost the second, 2-6. At No. 5 singles, Jergenson fell 0-6, 2-6. Thomforde battled in the first set, but ended with a 3-6, 0-6 score. Swigart finished off the day at No. 6 singles, falling 0-6, 1-6.
