ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team followed up Monday's two-match opening day in Florida with a solo evening match against Maryville College. The Eagles and Scots traded points early in a tight dual, but Maryville ultimately won out by a 5-2 score.
Doubles matches were where UNW shone brightest.
Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) started the party with a 6-1 win in the No. 1 match, then
Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) and
Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) followed with a 6-3 win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and
Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) fell 4-6 at No. 2 doubles, but it did not affect the scoring of the match since the doubles point had already been secured.
The teams continued to trade wins as singles matches commenced. Jarchow's 1-6, 2-6 loss in the No. 2 spot evened the match, but Swigart gave Northwestern the lead right back with a strong 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6. At No. 4 singles, Thomforde fell 3-6, 2-6 to make things all square once again. It would be the last time that was the case; however, as the Scots won the remaining matches to clinch the 5-2 win. Haack battled but lost 3-6, 4-6 at No. 1, and Majerus suffered a 2-6, 4-6 loss in the No. 3 match. Jergenson fought tooth-and-nail at No. 5 singles, but ultimately lost by a 5-7, 2-6 score to wrap things up.
The Eagles will get a full day's rest on Wednesday before playing two matches on Thursday, March 13
th. They will take on King's College (PA) at 6:30 AM (7:30 AM ET) and Wittenberg University at 5:30 PM (6:30 PM ET).
