FORT PIERCE, Fla. – After having Sunday off from competition, the University of Northwestern Baseball team returned to Lawnwood Baseball Complex on Monday morning to take on Wabash College. The Eagles had a rough go of it, falling by a 14-0 score.
Wabash struck first with a run in the top of the first, but it appeared Northwestern would be able to match them after
Braden Storts (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) doubled to lead off the bottom half.
Mark Bligh (Sydney, Australia/Magdalene Catholic College) singled to left field two batters later, but Storts was thrown out at home. A lineout ended the inning with Bligh stranded on first base. Storts made it to scoring position again in the bottom of the third after walking and stealing second base, but wasn't able to be brought home.
The score remained 1-0 heading into the fifth inning, which was where the Little Giants opened the flood gates by putting up six runs to extend their lead to 7-0. After UNW was held scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Wabash went right back to it, doubling its run total by scoring another seven runs to make it a 14-0 game.
Caleb Vereide (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) clubbed a triple in the bottom of the seventh, but that was the last threat the Eagles would produce as the game ended in a 14-0 final.
Aaron Severson (Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights) was an efficient 2-2 at the dish for UNW, while Vereide and Storts provided its only extra-base hits of the game.
Andrew Simon (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Mounds View) started on the mound for Northwestern and was credited with the loss, while striking out three batters in 4.1 innings.
The Eagles will look to rebound Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM (10:00 AM ET) versus Centenary University. Follow along with the live stats
