WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team played in its home state for the first time this season on Saturday, "hosting" the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at the White Bear Lake Life Time Fitness. The Pointers were able to get the best of the Eagles, winning by a 6-1 margin.
Northwestern actually won the first match of the day, as the No. 2 doubles team of
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) claimed a 6-3 win. Unfortunately, UNW was not able to capitalize on that and get a point, as
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) lost 3-6 at No. 1 doubles, and
Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and
Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) fell 4-6 in the No. 3 match, giving UWSP the doubles point.
On the singles side, Sullivan got out to a quick lead at No. 6 singles, winning the first set 6-0, but dropped the second, 2-6, and the tiebreak, 2-10. Swigart came up short in the No. 5 match as well, losing in straight sets, 4-6, 1-6. The lone point of the day came from
Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) at No. 4 singles, as the sophomore capped off an unbeaten day with a 5-7, 6-2, 14-12 win. Jarchow lost her No. 3 match with a mirrored 3-6, 3-6 score, while
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) fell, 6-4, 4-6, 9-11 at No. 2.
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) dropped the final match of the day, 6-3, 5-7, 6-10 at No. 1 singles. All three singles losses that went to a tiebreak began with a first-set win for the Eagles.
Northwestern will have another local match next Saturday, February 15
th, when it takes on Macalester College at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
