Eagles Lose Tight Match at the Wire to Macalester

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team battled back after its first loss of the season last Saturday to play a tight match with Macalester College on Saturday afternoon. In the end, the Eagles came up just short, losing a competitive, 3-4 match to the Scots.

Northwestern won the doubles point in dramatic fashion. Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles before Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) fell 2-6 in the No. 1 match. The opening point would then be determined by the No. 3 doubles match, which was won by UNW's Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), by a 6-4 margin.

Macalester tied the match up quickly with a sweep of Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) at No. 1 singles. A 4-6, 2-6 loss by Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) at No. 2 singles put the Scots in front, then Ross evened it back up with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 match. A 4-6, 4-6 Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) loss at No. 3 singles put the Eagles down 2-3, but Swigart delivered with her second win of the day, 2-6, 6-7 (3) in the No. 5 slot. It all came down to the No. 6 match, where Sullivan ultimately came up short, 4-6, 5-7, resulting in a 3-4 loss for the team.

Northwestern will have one final tune-up before its annual spring break trip on Saturday, February 22nd, when it takes on St. Scholastica at 11:30 AM in Owatonna.
