OWATONNA, Minn. - Saturday, UNW Women's Tennis faced off against a familiar foe: the St. Scholastica Saints, a former UMAC rival with a rich competitive history versus the Eagles. Ultimately the Saints prevailed, 7-0, in this high-energy matchup.
The No. 1 doubles team of
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) battled with Julia Maier and Paula Sendele, ultimately falling 0-6. No. 2 doubles (
Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) and
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne)) finished soon after with a score of 1-6. No. 3 doubles made things interesting, with a back and forth set resulting in a tiebreaker. Even after going down early,
Isabelle Sullivan (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and
Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) were able to stay alive, saving four match points. Despite the battle, the Saints came out on top, winning the breaker 8-6.
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) started out the singles contests with a tough battle at No. 1 singles, falling 1-6, 0-6. Jarchow was close behind at the three spot with a 3-6, 3-6 final score. Swigart played a close first set at No. 5 singles, but was ultimately outlasted, resulting in a 4-6, 1-6 loss.
Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) then took the court to take on Katia Bartels in the No. 2 match and fell 0-6, 2-6. Ross took a tough first set in stride at No. 4 singles and rallied in the second set to get some points on the board, but fell short, 0-6, 3-6. Finally, Sullivan closed out the day with a 2-6, 0-6 result at No. 6.
The Eagles will next be in action on March 10th in sunny Orlando, Florida, taking on Millsaps College to kick off their annual Spring Break trip.
