WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team made its debut in the Land of 10,000 Lakes Saturday after opening its season last weekend in Wisconsin. The Eagles battled a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point team that already had 10 matches under its belt this season and wound up leaving with a 0-7 loss.
Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) suffered a 3-6 loss at No. 1 doubles to get the day started, which was followed by a tight loss at No. 2 doubles by
Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) and
Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls). Despite UW-Stevens Point already having locked up the doubles point,
Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) and
Ian Barber (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) dropped the No. 3 match, 2-6.
Sam Kettelhut's (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) No. 6 match was the first singles one to conclude, as the sophomore lost 1-6, 1-6. Jergenson lost by the same score at No. 5 singles, then Majerus fell 2-6, 0-6 shortly thereafter. Thomforde's No. 3 singles match ended in a 3-6, 4-6 loss for the freshman, which was followed by the reigning UMAC North Division Player of the Week, Jarchow, suffering a 5-7, 0-6 defeat at No. 2. Haack's No. 1 singles match ended in a 1-6, 2-6 loss to close out the day.
UNW will take on Macalester College at 1:00 PM next Saturday, February 15
th, at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
