Eagles Battle With Augsburg on the Road

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern Women's Basketball team made the short trip down to Augsburg University's Si Melby Hall in search of its first win of the season on Tuesday night. The Eagles were able to keep the game close throughout and bested the Auggies in the third quarter, but ultimately fell by a 70-60 score.

Four different Eagles scored in the first quarter, led by Carli Elrod's (Lindstrom, Minn./Spectrum) four points. Brenna Vogel's (New Prague, Minn./South Metro) three-pointer with 2:09 left in the period tied the game at 11, but two Augsburg free throws on the ensuing possession were the final points of the opening 10 minutes, putting the hosts ahead, 13-11.

The Auggies opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 12, and pushed the margin to 32-16 before Northwestern went on a run of its own. Ella Frazier (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) scored seven points, Emma Korinek (New Brighton, Minn./Concordia Academy) five and Marin Blom (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) two as UNW scored 13 of the final 16 points of the half to make it 35-29 at the intermission.

A Katelyn Lindberg (Clearwater, Minn./Monticello) jump shot in the opening minute of the third quarter brought the Eagles within four, and an 8-0 surge sparked by a Vogel three-point play and a triple from Olivia Heikes (Braham, Minn./Braham Area) evened the score at 39 with 3:06 remaining in the period. Augsburg scored seven-straight to regain control before Blom sunk a pair of free throws in the final minute of the quarter to make it 46-41 with 10 minutes to play.

The Auggies were able to get their lead back to double digits early in the fourth, but a 5-0 run that included a Lindberg jumper and a Frazier and-one brought the visitors back within five with 5:48 left in the game. Karley Loven (Swanville, Minn./Swanville) scored five points in two possessions to get the Eagles within four, but Augsburg was able to pull away with sound free throw shooting for a 70-60 win.

UNW's 60 points were its highest scoring output through four games this season, and Frazier deserves much of the credit. The freshman put up a career-high 16 points to go along with four assists and three steals, while her classmate, Emma Korinek (New Brighton, Minn./Concordia Academy), scored nine points and also logged three steals despite fouling out. Loven also scored nine points and Blom eight, in addition to three assists and a pair of steals. Vogel contributed three assists and three steals, while Lindberg and Elrod were the rebounding leaders with five and four, respectively.

Northwestern will continue its four-game road trip with a jaunt down Snelling Avenue to Macalester on Saturday, November 22nd at 1:00 PM.
