ST. PAUL, Minn. - In a busy Homecoming afternoon, the number two Eagles battled the top-ranked Yellowjackets from UW–Superior in a highly anticipated UMAC matchup. After 90 minutes of intense, back-and-forth action, neither side could break through, ending in a hard-fought 0–0 draw.
Northwestern outshot UW–Superior 9–4 in the opening half and controlled a slight edge in possession at 51%. With 30 seconds left in the first half, Marie Kendall (Dakar, Senegal/Dakar Academy) nearly put the Eagles on the board with a powerful strike toward the lower corner, but the Yellowjackets' keeper made a diving save to force a corner as the half expired.
The second half mirrored much of the same intensity. The Eagles again outshot the Yellowjackets 5–4, nearly doubling Superior's total attempts across the match. Goalkeeper Sam Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) came up clutch once more, recording five saves and securing her fourth consecutive shutout. Kendall led the attack with seven shots, including three on target, while Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) and Briella Babcock (Byron, Minn./Byron) each added two shots apiece, one on goal.
With the draw, UNW fell to third in the UMAC with five more conference matches remaining in the season. The Eagles will take on the North Central Rams on Wednesday at 1:00 PM in downtown Minneapolis.
