MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Eagles continued their dominant run on Wednesday, defeating North Central 9-0 on the road to remain unbeaten in seven straight matches. The win marked the team's fifth consecutive shutout, and featured seven different goal scorers in a complete team performance.
It took just six minutes for UNW to strike first. Under pressure, Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) slipped a pass to Meghan Corbett (Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral), whose shot ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar and in for her first goal of the season. In the 25th minute, Naomi Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool) received a pass from Briella Babcock (Byron, Minn./Byron) and doubled the lead after squaring up and curling a beautiful shot to the far post. Minutes later, Babcock added another assist, this time feeding Mersberger, who sealed off her defender and finished past the NCU keeper for the Eagles' third goal. UNW added a fourth goal in the 33rd minute when Marie Kendall (Dakar, Senegal/Dakar Academy) crashed the box to finish off another dangerous ball from Babcock. Just before halftime, Kendall returned the favor, assisting Babcock's header with 30 seconds left to make it 5-0.
The Eagles didn't slow down after the break. Less than two minutes into the second half, Mersberger broke away and slipped a shot past the keeper for her second of the game. She completed her hat trick 13 minutes later, controlling a pass from Kendall, shaking her defender, and firing top shelf for her third and Northwestern's seventh of the day. Jessica Redman (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) added her first collegiate goal as she lost several defenders before finding the back of the net. Alison Lippert (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) also collected her first career goal as she capped off the scoring by cleaning up a rebound at the back post.
UNW dominated from start to finish with 25 shots on goal, led by Mersberger's 14-shot, three-goal, one-assist performance. Kendall tallied a goal and an assist, while Babcock finished with a goal and three assists. Meehan, Corbett, Redman, and Lippert each added goals in the balanced attack. In net, Sam Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) and Kaisa Niska (Ramsey, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) combined for three saves in the shutout effort.
The Eagles return home this Saturday for a crucial UMAC matchup against No. 2 Bethany Lutheran at 1:00 PM.
