Skaar Leads the Way for the Eagles in Dual With Augsburg

MAPLEWOOD, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Men's Golf team was making their way downtown on Thursday afternoon for a dual match hosted by Augsburg University. Well, okay, technically the course that the match was played on is in Maplewood and that isn't strictly "downtown" but Augsburg is located downtown and we like making song references.

The Eagles were back in action; competing for the first time since March 26th down in Oklahoma. This was the first time UNW Men's Golf played in a meet in Minnesota in the 2024 spring season. Augsburg had everything working on Thursday, putting up a team score of +5 to win the dual. Northwestern finished with a team score of +35 for the round.

Gordon Skaar (Coleraine, Minn./Homeschool) shot his best round of the spring so far on Thursday. Skaar finished in a tie for fifth place with a round of 77 (+5). Skaar missed his best round of the season by a single stroke; he shot a 76 (+4) in September at the MLC Invite.

Shane Seiffert (Corcoran, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Dawson Burke (Rogers, Minn./Maple Grove) were the next pair of Eagles to finish. The duo each shot an 80 (+8) to land in the top ten overall. Burke was another Eagle who missed his best round of the season by a lone stroke having shot a 79 at the BLC Invite back in September.

Jackson Nyhus (Henning, Minn./Henning) was the last UNW golfer to scratch the top ten. Nyhus shot an 81 (+9) to finish alone in tenth place.

There was a lot of team chemistry shown by the remaining four UNW golfers as all of the Eagles shot the same score as one of their teammates. Sam Schwarz (Marshall, Minn./Marshall) and Mikey Vall (Eau Claire, Wis./Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) each shot an 85 (+13). Ethan Van Hauwaert (Marshall, Minn./Marshall) and Mason Heidgerken (Melrose, Minn./Melrose Area) each finished at 86 (+14).

The Eagles have two spring events left before they call it quits for the 2023-24 season. The next time the UNW Men will hit the links will be on Monday, April 22nd at the Island View Golf Club in a dual with Crown.
