BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team stayed close to home this weekend for their match against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. In a hard-fought battle, the Eagles succumbed to the Pointers in a 3-6 final match score.
The match began with the Eagles facing a 1-2 deficit after the conclusion of the doubles matches. At first doubles, with the aid of
Annie Orvis's (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) dominant volleys and
Abby Johnson's (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) contentious ground strokes, they sailed to an 8-1 victory. Next off the court, the third doubles pairing of
Madeline Troolin (Cambridge, Minn./Homeschool) and
Abigail Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) unfortunately fell to their opponents 4-8.
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) fiercely fought at second doubles but eventually lost, 7-8 (8-10).
The Eagles remained positive as they entered singles play. After the conclusion of the first two singles matches, they found themselves at an advantage of 3-2. At sixth singles, Ross won 6-1, 6-0 and Johnson, at second singles, won 6-1, 6-1. UW-Stevens Point tied the match score at 3-3 with a win at first singles, where after fighting hard, Orvis lost 1-6, 3-6. At third singles, Jarchow took her opponent to a tight, deciding, third-set tiebreaker, ultimately finishing with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6). Stevens Point clinched the match with a win at fourth singles where Marquardt fell to her opponent 5-7, 1-6. Last on the court, fifth singles
Rayna Baumgarn (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) narrowly lost in a 5-7, 5-7 battle.
The Eagles eagerly look to next weekend, where they face the College of St. Scholastica and Ripon College in Owatonna, Minnesota on Saturday.
