OWATONNA, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team doubled-dipped down south on Saturday, squaring off with the College of St. Scholastica and Ripon College in a triangular in Owatonna. The day produced two results on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, as Northwestern was swept by St. Scholastica in the morning before sweeping Ripon in the nightcap.
Match One: College of St. Scholastica Saints
An old rivalry was rekindled Saturday in Owatonna, as former UMAC foes Northwestern and St. Scholastica did battle on the courts at West Hills Tennis & Fitness Center. The Saints began the day with a bang, earning an 8-0 win at first singles over
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) and
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool). CSS then closed out the doubles session with an 8-4 win at third doubles over
Abigail Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) and
Madeline Troolin (Cambridge, Minn./Homeschool), before repeating the feat with another 8-4 win at second doubles at the expense of
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie).
Unfortunately for UNW, the singles matches brought about similar results. Johnson suffered a 1-6, 0-6 loss at #2 singles before Jarchow was second off with a 4-6, 0-6 loss at the #3 spot. Orvis fell at #1 singles by a 2-6, 2-6 score, while Ross was next off after a 1-6, 0-6 defeat. The Eagles battled in the final two singles matches, but ultimately came up just short in both. Marquardt dropped the first set at #4 singles, 1-6, before battling back for a 6-3 win in set two. Her opponent was able to win the tiebreak, 10-6.
Rayna Baumgarn (Holmen, Wis./Holmen), at #6 singles, won the first set, 7-6 (5), before dropping the second, 4-6, and the tiebreak, 5-10. The Saints completed the sweep as Northwestern fell to 2-4 on the season.
Match Two: Ripon College Red Hawks
If the UNW Women's Tennis team was downtrodden after being swept by St. Scholastica Saturday afternoon, it certainly didn't show it. The Eagles wasted no time bouncing back in the evening session, as the #2 doubles team of Elisa Jarchow and
Abigail Ross (Chico, Calif./Central), as well as the #1 doubles team of
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) and
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool), each earned 8-3 wins. At #3 doubles,
Rayna Baumgarn (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) and
Grace Buswell (Winona, Minn/Winona) fought to an 8-5 win to give Northwestern a 3-0 cushion heading into singles.
The singles portion of the match provided just as much, if not more domination from the Eagles. Orvis took home a 6-1, 6-3 win at first singles, while Johnson cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the second spot. Jarchow picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win at third singles and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) won convincingly in the fourth position, 6-1, 6-1. Ross had no troubles at fifth singles, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Madeline Troolin (Cambridge, Minn./Homeschool) closed out the day in style, taking the first set, 6-3 before closing out the 9-0 sweep with a clean, 6-0 win in the second set.
The Eagles will take their 3-4 record much further south to Florida for their annual spring break trip. They will play five matches in the Sunshine State, beginning with Connecticut College and Salve Regina University on Monday, March 11
