MADISON, Wis.- The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team took to the road to Madison, Wisconsin to face Edgewood College and Buena Vista University this weekend. After a hard loss last weekend, hopes were high entering Saturday; however, the Eagles emerged 1-1. UNW fell to Edgewood, 4-5, and swept Buena Vista, 9-0.
Match 1: Edgewood College Eagles
The afternoon started off with two hard fought losses first and third doubles.
Madeline Troolin (Cambridge, Minn./Homeschool) and
Abigail Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) at three doubles along with
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) in the one spot both ended the doubles rounds with 4-8 losses. At second doubles,
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) kept the Eagles alive by securing an 8-7 (7-4) victory against their opponents.
Heading into singles, the Eagles' backs were up against the wall down 1-2. Needing four out of the six singles was going to be a tall task. The task only grew larger as the Eagles found themselves down after the completion of the first two singles matches. After a tight fist set,
Rayna Baumgarn (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) fell to her opponent, 5-7, 1-6. Orvis also lost in a tough first singles match, 3-6, 2-6. The next two matches gave the Eagles a glimmer of hope. Johnson, at second singles, persevered to complete a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win. Ross, who was named UMAC Player of the Week last week, proved to be dominant in her sixth singles match with a winning score of 6-1, 6-2. Edgewood clinched the match at the three singles match where
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) lost 4-6, 0-6. Although Edgewood had already clinched the match, Marquardt was not demoralized and battled to a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win at four singles.
Match 2: Buena Vista University Beavers
Following their loss to Edgewood, the Northwestern Eagles faced the Buena Vista Beavers. First off the court for the Eagles were
Rayna Baumgarn (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) and
Grace Buswell (Winona, Minn/Winona), who out a decisive 8-5 win at three doubles.
Abigail Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) and
Madeline Troolin (Cambridge, Minn./Homeschool) raced to a quick victory, winning 8-3 at second doubles. Finishing out the doubles competition,
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) brought the Eagles lead to 3-0 with an 8-5 win at first doubles.
Due to limited court time, all singles matches versus Buena Vista were shortened to 8 game pro sets, which only led to a quicker win by the Eagles. Troolin completed her six singles match with a convincing, 8-0 victory. Ross, Baumgarn and
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) all cruised to 8-1 wins at five, four and two singles, respectively. Marquardt rallied to an 8-2 victory at three singles. Completing the match,
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) pulled out an 8-5 win at the one singles. Her win brought the Eagles to a clean sweep win against Buena Vista University.
The Eagles are looking forward to staying a little closer to home for their next match, as they will face the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Bloomington, Minnesota on Saturday, February 24.
